We Tested 6 Popular Baby Wipes – Which One Is Gentle and Strong?

G'day parents. If you've ever fumbled through your nappy bag at the park while your bub is doing their best impersonation of a volcano, you know that not all baby wipes are created equal. Between the sticky humidity of a Brisbane arvo and the dry heat of an Adelaide summer, Aussie families need a wipe that's gentle on sensitive skin but tough enough to handle a Code Red without falling apart.

We grabbed six of the most popular baby wipes you can find on Aussie shelves and put them through real-world testing with four bubs aged from newborn to toddler. We poked at them, stretched them, wiped sticky hands, cleaned sandy faces at the beach, and yes, dealt with our fair share of explosions. Here's how each one stacked up against our gentle-but-strong checklist.

Where to buy them and what they cost down under

We picked wipes that you can actually walk into a store and grab today. That meant hitting the baby aisle at Coles and Woolworths, popping into Chemist Warehouse for the pharmacy brands, swinging by Big W for the budget options, and even checking Aldi for the Babylove range. We also tested a couple from Costco because, let's be honest, buying in bulk makes sense when you're doing roughly ten nappy changes a day.

The lineup included Curash Fragrance Free, WaterWipes, Huggies Natural Care, Babylove Sensitive (Aldi), Johnson's Baby Extra Sensitive, and Kirkland Signature (Costco). Prices ranged from about $2.50 for a small travel pack to around $35 for a big bulk tub, so there was something for every budget.

Thickness, texture and the finger poke test

First impressions matter, especially when you're one-handed and your bub is arching like a tiny gymnast. We gave each wipe a quick finger poke to see if it would hold together when wet, then tried to stretch it gently between both hands. Thinner wipes tended to cling to fingers and tear at the edges, which is frustrating when you're trying to clean a wriggly bottom.

Curash and Huggies came out on top for thickness, feeling substantial without being stiff. WaterWipes were noticeably thinner but surprisingly resilient when pulled. The Aldi Babylove wipes had a softer, more cloth-like feel that some testers loved and others found a bit grabby on delicate skin. Johnson's wipes had a silky, almost wet sensation that made quick cleans easy but felt a bit flimsy during bigger jobs.

Gentle on sensitive Aussie skin

Aussie summers are brutal on baby skin, with UV, sweat, and chlorine from the backyard pool all conspiring to make bubs extra prone. For fair-skinned bubs in particular, dryness and eczema flare-ups are common, so fragrance and alcohol were immediate deal-breakers for our panel.

WaterWipes are famously minimalist, using only water and a tiny drop of fruit extract, and they sailed through this part of the test. Curash Fragrance Free also performed beautifully, with no redness after repeated use over a week. Huggies Natural Care had a very mild scent that didn't irritate any of our testers, though one baby with very reactive skin showed slight pinkness after a few days.

Babylove Sensitive and Johnson's Extra Sensitive were both marketed as gentle, and mostly delivered, though Johnson's contains a small amount of fragrance that we wished they'd left out. The Kirkland wipes were the most surprising, with a clean ingredient list and zero irritation across the board.

Strength when the going gets tough

A wipe that falls apart mid-change is worse than no wipe at all. We tested strength by using each one on sticky Weet-Bix faces, sunscreen-smeared arms after a day at the beach, and the obvious: full nappy blowouts that would make any parent's hair stand on end.

Huggies and Curash tied for the win here, holding together through multiple wipes and even a bit of scrubbing. WaterWipes, while thinner, didn't tear but did pill a bit on rough use. Babylove was strong when dry but weakened noticeably when soaked through. Johnson's tended to stretch out and needed replacement sooner, which wasn't ideal during marathon clean-ups.

If you're heading out for the day and want one wipe per task without doubling up, Huggies is your mate. For home use where you might need two or three anyway, WaterWipes' softness makes the slight fragility worth it.

Scent, ingredients and what parents actually care about

Let's talk about what mums and dads in the school-ground chat keep asking about. Beyond gentleness and strength, parents want to know about ingredients, biodegradability, and whether the pack will actually stay moist to the last wipe. Nobody wants to pull out a dry wipe on a long car trip from Sydney to the Central Coast.

Curash, WaterWipes, and Babylove all have fully compostable or biodegradable options, which is a nice bonus for eco-minded families. Huggies and Johnson's offer plastic packaging that keeps wipes incredibly moist but isn't great for the environment. Kirkland sits in the middle, with a recyclable tub but standard wipe material.

We also noticed that the plastic-lidded tubs (Huggies, Curash, Kirkland) did a better job of keeping wipes fresh than the flip-top soft packs (WaterWipes, Babylove, Johnson's), which tended to dry out around the top wipe after a few days of use. While you're ticking off family must-buys, don't forget the school-age crowd. The verdict and how the wipes compare

After weeks of testing, the clear winner for families who want both gentleness and strength is Huggies Natural Care, with Curash Fragrance Free as the best pharmacy-shelf alternative and WaterWipes taking the crown for ultra-sensitive skin. Here's a quick side-by-side look at how all six performed.

Wipe Gentleness Strength Scent Price (approx.) Pack Type
Huggies Natural Care Very good Excellent Very mild $5–$7 (80ct) Flip-top
Curash Fragrance Free Excellent Excellent None $5–$6 (80ct) Tub
WaterWipes Excellent Good None $8–$10 (60ct) Flip-top
Babylove Sensitive Good Fair None $3.50 (80ct) Flip-top
Johnson's Extra Sensitive Good Fair Mild $4–$5 (80ct) Flip-top
Kirkland Signature Very good Very good None $30–$35 (900ct) Tub

If you're stocking the nappy bag for a day at Bondi or a playdate in Parramatta, grab Huggies. For eczema-prone bubs, WaterWipes is worth the extra spend. And if you're a regular at Aldi, Babylove Sensitive is a genuinely solid budget pick. Want to win a bulk stash of your favourite to put through its paces yourself? Before you head off to the shops, one last tip: keep a small pack of wipes in every room, in the car, and in your pram. Australian parenting is busy enough without searching for a wipe when you need one most. G'day and happy wiping.
